Ireland's Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred) Bill — Withdrawn After Public Backlash
Ireland's government attempted to pass sweeping new hate speech legislation that would have criminalised possession of material "likely to incite hatred" — including material on private devices — and created broadly defined offences for "condoning, denying or grossly trivialising" designated historical events. The bill passed the Dáil but faced intense public opposition and was withdrawn by incoming Minister for Justice Helen McEntee in November 2024 before completing Seanad passage. Critics had warned provisions on "possession" of hateful material were totalitarian in scope; comedian Dave Rubin and international commentators highlighted the bill as an example of Western democratic speech criminalisation.
