Twitter (Pre-Musk)

Public (Jack Dorsey / Parag Agrawal era)

Under Dorsey and Agrawal, Twitter developed extensive shadowbanning systems, maintained internal "visibility filtering" that suppressed accounts without notification, and coordinated with US government agencies to moderate content. The Twitter Files (2022–23) revealed direct FBI, DHS, and White House contacts with Trust & Safety teams requesting account actions. The platform banned a sitting US president and suppressed the New York Post's Hunter Biden laptop story days before the 2020 election.

TikTok

ByteDance (Chinese state-linked)

TikTok's content moderation operates under dual pressure: US and EU regulatory demands, and ByteDance's Beijing-headquartered ownership. Internal documents leaked in 2022 revealed moderators were instructed to suppress content about Tiananmen Square, Tibetan independence, and criticism of Xi Jinping globally. Separately, Western content moderation has suppressed political content under advertiser-friendly "community standards."

Facebook / Meta

Meta Platforms Inc. (Mark Zuckerberg)

Meta's Facebook suppressed the Hunter Biden laptop story, enforced COVID content policies that silenced millions of users, and operated a dedicated portal for US government agencies to submit content removal requests — later revealed in court filings. In 2025 Zuckerberg announced removal of third-party fact-checkers and reform of enforcement policies, partly acknowledging prior over-restriction.

Reddit

Advance Publications / Public (IPO 2024)

Reddit's 2015 "Transformation" under CEO Ellen Pao and successor Steve Huffman marked a pivotal shift from a free-speech platform to one with aggressive content policies. Hundreds of subreddits were quarantined or banned over political and cultural content. The 2023 API crisis — banning third-party apps to force users onto ad-laden clients — triggered the largest moderator revolt in Reddit's history, revealing a pattern of top-down corporate control over community governance.

YouTube

Alphabet / Google

YouTube operates one of the most consequential speech platforms in the world and has developed extensive demonetisation, suppression, and removal systems since 2017. The "Adpocalypse" created financial incentives to self-censor; algorithmic suppression of disfavoured content operates without user notification; and coordinated removals of COVID, election, and political content during 2020–22 were later partially reversed — with no reinstatement of affected creators.

Apple App Store

Apple Inc.

Apple's App Store operates as a monopoly distribution chokepoint on iOS and gives Apple unilateral power to remove applications globally. Apple has removed apps at the request of authoritarian governments (notably China), removed the Parler app following the January 6 Capitol events, and threatened to remove Twitter/X following Musk's takeover. Apple's compliance with Chinese government app removal requests includes VPN apps, news apps, and encrypted messaging tools.

Google Search

Alphabet Inc.

As the dominant global search engine, Google's algorithmic choices function as editorial decisions at planetary scale. Documented cases include systematic downranking of conservative and independent media following 2016–17 algorithm updates, compliance with Right to be Forgotten removal requests, and CISA-coordinated election content suppression. The Google Leak of 2024 revealed the extent of manual editorial controls available to Google engineers over search rankings.

PARTIALLY REFORMEDPodcast PlatformPeak: 2022Stockholm, Sweden

Spotify

Public (Daniel Ek)

Spotify faced coordinated pressure campaigns in 2022 from artists and media organisations demanding the removal of Joe Rogan's podcast over COVID misinformation allegations. The company responded by adding content warnings to episodes, removing some back catalogue, and publishing its "Platform Rules." Rogan's show remained but the episode removals and capitulation to advertiser/artist pressure set a concerning precedent for podcast distribution.
