UK Post-Riot Social Media Arrests — Hundreds Jailed for Online Posts

Following riots in several English towns in late July and early August 2024 (sparked by the Southport stabbings), UK authorities mounted one of the largest peacetime crackdowns on social media speech in a Western democracy. Over 800 people were arrested; many were charged with offences including "stirring up racial hatred" and communications offences for posts, memes, and reposts — some made years before the riots. Sentences of several years were handed down for individual social media posts. Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally warned that "the full force of the law" would be applied to online speech. Critics, including US politicians and free speech advocates, described the prosecutions as disproportionate and politically selective.
